Keep Whales and Dolphins Out of Captivity!
Captive Animals' Protection Society patron Mike Hancock MP (Lib Dem, Portsmouth South), has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM 1342, Keeping of Cetaceans in Captivity) calling on the government to introduce legislation prohibiting the keeping of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) in captivity.
While the last dolphinarium in the UK closed down in 1993, there is nothing to prevent a new one setting up if a company were able to meet existing guidelines. Recent events have highlighted the possibility of a UK establishment considering keeping cetaceans in captivity. In particular, it was announced in March 2007 that Blackpool Zoo has been purchased by Spanish-based company Parques Reunidos which operates dolphinariums in Spain, France and Argentina. Other companies with UK establishments have overseas sections that keep captive cetaceans.
This of course is of great concern and for over a year, questions have been raised within DEFRA (Department of Environment) and its advisory body, the Zoos Forum, regarding current legislation in the UK relating to captive cetacean establishments. This follows an inquiry from an individual interested in establishing a marine park in England to keep whales and dolphins.
Campaigners and NGOs concerned with animal protection, including the Captive Animals' Protection Society (CAPS), Marine Connection and Cetacea Defence have long highlighted the cruelty of keeping cetaceans in captivity and continued captures from the wild to supply these facilities. Their life in captivity has been likened to living in a hall of mirrors which restricts their sonar communication and particularly cruel due to their nature as intelligent social animals, used to ranging vast areas in the wild. The message is clear - animals are not here for our entertainment.
The closure of the last dolphinarium came about due to the introduction of UK regulations on captive cetacean facilities which existing facilities could not meet and concerted efforts by anti-captivity campaigners. Organisations such as CAPS, Marine Connection and Cetacea Defence have worked hard to discourage tourists from visiting such places on overseas holidays, including the dangerous and scientifically-unsound swimming with dolphins programmes.
CAPS, Marine Connection and Cetacea Defence believe that legislation clearly prohibiting the keeping of cetaceans in captivity within the UK needs to be introduced as a matter of urgency in order to prevent such facilities being established.

SAMPLE LETTER

give you ample background on an issue. Try to change some words, pare down

Honourable Government Officials:
As news of Hong Kong's mass pig extermination travels the globe, the public is outraged by accounts of shrieking animals left to die on floors soaked in blood and brain matter. In the government's rush to phase-out pig farming licenses, it has ordered the massacre of 40,000 or more breeder pigs.
Authorities assured farmers their surrendered pigs would be "humanely destroyed."
Instead, the government hopes to meet its year-end deadline with gunshot-style killing inside the New Territories North Animal Management Centre of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD). As described in press reports, "A shooter with ear-shields on, holding a Remington shotgun, was standing on a concrete platform three feet high above the pigs. 'Bang!' Another pig fell to the ground. Although shot in the head, the pig was still struggling hard, rolling from side to side with the pain. The shooter did not give him a follow-up shot." Some pigs agonize for five or more minutes before succumbing to their wounds. Animals shudder in the corner of the killing room, forced to watch the shooter hook his next pig. This constitutes needless torment. In fact, the daily massacres are so inhumane officials have outsourced killers to replace government veterinarians who refused to participate.
Once again, I respectfully ask Chinese officials to make enforceable animal protection laws a priority before the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. The mass killing of pigs without electric stunning violates China's "Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals Ordinance," which stipulates an animal must not be "tortured or terrified." Fully alert, bullet-riddled pigs are clearly "tortured and terrified." Food and Environmental Department (FEHD) slaughterhouse regulations call for pigs to never endure unnecessary pain.
Photos and eyewitness descriptions show these pigs do not experience instantaneous death. This is hardly an "internationally accepted method of euthanizing pigs." It is morally and legally reprehensible.
If this brutal extermination of pigs continues, it will irreversibly shame China and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. What China saves in cheap, crude kill methods -- it loses in revenue from Chinese tourism and products. I stand firm in my boycott of Chinese travel and goods until authorities implement significant reforms for pigs, dogs, cats, bears and all animals.
Thank you for accepting my comments on this matter of international concern.
Sincerely,
Not many people realise that Greenpeace, the World Bank and WWF all have very similar rainforest protection strategies, arguing for decades that "certified sustainable logging" of ancient rainforests is possible and desirable. These groups obstinately cling to advocating for industrial ancient rainforest logging for various institutional reasons despite decades of near universal failure of such policy to approach ecological sustainability or just social equity. They appear immune to new ecological science which indicates that selective logging dramatically diminishes ancient rainforests, while releasing carbon and limiting future carbon storage.
I am devastated that WWF and Greenpeace in particular have become a major part of the reason the world's last great rainforests are being logged. But we bright green grassroots forest conservationists know remaining large, intact rainforests such as those found in the Congo Basin must remain intact to achieve global ecological sustainability, and have no choice but to confront the ancient forest logging apologists and get them to commit to ending ancient rainforest logging.
This is quite possibly the most important rainforest alert ever in my 16 year history of rainforest campaigning. The facts are irrefutable - please take action and forward widely or the world's ancient rainforest wildernesses will either be lost or turned into tree plantations.

Designer Giorgio Armani recently announced that he is not using fur in his collections, with one big exception: RABBIT FUR. This means MILLIONS of rabbits will suffer and die every year so that they can be made into jackets, hats, glove linings, etc.
Rabbits in factory farms spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages, where they are exposed to all weather conditions. They often go without adequate shelter, clean water, and veterinary care, and they are denied the opportunity to engage in even the most basic, natural behaviours, such as stretching their legs and burrowing.
Fur farmers use the cheapest methods available to kill rabbits, including hitting them on their heads with heavy objects and breaking their necks. These crude killing methods aren't always effective, and sometimes animals "wake up" while they are being skinned.
Rabbits are intelligent, clean animals with unique personalities. They are individuals with feelings, families, and friendships. They are more than just scraps of skin to be sewn onto collars and cuffs. You all know this about rabbits. Now it's time to educate Armani. Besides pointing out the needless suffering of rabbits raised and slaughtered for fur, you may also wish to tell him that according to the American Pet Products Manufacturer' s Association, rabbits are the third most popular companion animal in the US. They are also third in Great Britain and are very popular in Japan. You also may mention how many rabbit organizations there are in your locale. In the metro Washington, DC area alone, there are 17 rabbit rescues and shelters that are involved with rescuing and rehoming rabbits. To a business minded person this equals SALES LOST and the point should not be lost on Armani.
Armani is aware of the conditions in rabbit mills and farms, yet he continues to use rabbit fur. What he is probably not aware of is how great rabbits are. Please write to Armani and politely urge him to stop using all fur in his designs:

Pakistan airlines have been flying beagle dogs from Marshall Farms in America through JFK airport to suffer and die in British labs. Pakistan Airlines flew 64 dogs that ended up at HLS last year, and are flying dogs that are going to B & K, UK lab animal suppliers.
There is no excuse for this disgusting, evil trade. Imagine those dogs, frightened and confused, in the hold of an aeroplane, then being trucked in the hell of HLS, never to see the light of day ever again.
Please contact Pakistan Airlines and ask them to make the decision to stop their involvement in this disgusting trade, and please organise demonstrations at their offices worldwide to protest at their involvement with the dealers in death.

Pope Benedict XVI has been seen wearing a red velvet hat trimmed with white ermine fur, known as "camauro". The hat was commonly worn by popes in the medieval period to keep their heads warm for outdoor events during the colder winter months. For special occasions, a red velvet, ermine-trimmed cape - called a mozzetta, was worn. The last pope to have worn the traditional fur-trimmed papal hat in public was Pope John XXIII.
On special occasions, such as official audiences with heads of state, Pope Benedict also wears a red cape trimmed with white fur. His Holiness, the Pope, may not be aware that fur bearing animals are skinned alive for fur. By signing this petition, you will be asking His Holiness, the Pope, not to wear real fur. There are "faux" fur of excellent quality that may be used for his official outfit without cruelty that goes beyond human decency. Or he may choose not to wear fur at all. Such cruelty free garments will be most appropriate for his Holiness to represent the teachings of Jesus Christ which are based on compassion towards all living beings.
Once informed, His Holiness will surely agree that animals are God's creatures and deserve to be treated with compassion, the most sacred dogma of Christ's teachings. You may also write to him and ask him with your own words to please stop wearing fur. This would be a signal to the Catholic churches around the world to reflect and preserve the sanctity of all God's creatures.

bearing animals' suffering, please access the documentary below by the EAST
International and The Swiss Animal Protection Agency. The images on this

Speak out against IAMS/Procter & Gamble (P&G) sponsorship of 'National Pet Month'
National Pet Month (www.nationalpetmonth.org.uk) is a charity that claims to support 'responsible pet ownership'. So, Uncaged asks, why is this year's event is sponsored by Iams/P&G?!?
Iams' own stated policy allows them to incarcerate dogs and cats in laboratory conditions for unlimited periods and cause them harm in experiments; animals suffer psychological and physical harm in such conditions. Furthermore Iams kill other species of animals in pet food research.
It should also be noted that Iams & Eukanuba are Procter & Gamble brands. Any Iams/Eukanuba purchases support and fund poisoning tests on animals for the sake of new cosmetics, toiletries and household products, in addition to the animal cruelty directly associated with Iams. There is a growing Global Boycott of Procter & Gamble in protest at such cruel and unnecessary tests. By accepting sponsorship from Iams/Eukanuba and P&G, National Pet Month is effectively endorsing such animal abuse.
Is National Pet Month really a commercial promotion masquerading as an animal welfare initiative in order to fool unsuspecting animal lovers? It is hard to reconcile a 'responsible' attitude to animals in the home with P&G's treatment of them for testing purposes.
The theme of National Pet Month centres on what 'Love is...' for animals. Love is... not promoting a company that poisons and kills animals for the sake of whiter whites or younger-looking skin. All animals - not just 'pets' - deserve respect.

Brighton SeaLife Centre have sent a solicitors letter to Brighton Animal Rights campaigners as a result of their successful, on going campaign against the Centre. The letter claims that Brighton SeaLife Centre takes great care to guarantee the welfare and well being of the animals in it's care. Also, not only do they comply with all legal and regulatory requirements relating to the care of animals at the Centre, but their efforts in this regard go beyond that, to include extensive conservation and educational work.
They say AR's have chosen to ignore these facts and have targeted the Centre with a damaging and potentially defamatory campaign which is disproportionate and unwarranted.
Further, they say that in recent weeks AR's have escalated their campaign to the point where they present a risk to the safety of the public, it's staff and the animals at the Centre. They have threatened that should the action continue, then AR's are put on notice that the SLC intends to seek recompense for any loss or damage suffered as a result of AR's activities.
This has been a very successful campaign which has seen plans to build outdoor pools containing seals and otters withdrawn, even after planning permission was granted.
Undercover investigations have revealed blatant disregard for animal welfare. Children have been photographed touching the rays, encouraging them to break the surface of the water. This is totally unnatural behaviour. Although there are signs asking people to not touch the rays, people who do so are not challenged. Why are the animals in "touch pools"? Why are the tanks open ?
Before Christmas photographs were taken of 3 Rays which had injuries to their tails and 1 to it's body. The SLC claim this is due to them biting each other during the mating season. Mysteriously, the next time the investigator visited the Centre, there was only 1 injured Ray, what had become of the others?
The same investigator witnessed a crab struggling to right itself for an hour before a teenage member of staff could be bothered to assist it. A catfish which is kept in a tank so small it can't even turn around. Numerous visitors comment on this. Common shore crabs being handled almost continuously. SLC members of staff acknowledged that this is stressful for the crabs. Children banging on the sides of the tanks, this frequent behaviour went unchallenged by the staff. Poor staffing levels result in some areas being unsupervised, leaving animals in a vulnerable state.
A high number of visitors to the centre are in fact foreign, all signage and information in the SLC is in English. We do not believe that the SeaLife Centre is taking great care to guarantee the welfare of animals in it's care. In fact we believe that their Zoo licence should not be renewed, as the building which houses the animals is a totally unsuitable environment in which to keep animals.
You may be interested to know that even though this letter is from the SeaLife Centre, they are in fact owned by the Merlin Entertainments Group, which is controlled by the Blackstone Group and The Tussauds Group. This brings together some of the biggest brand names in the global theme park and attractions market.
The combined Merlin Entertainments Group is the world's second biggest visitor attractions operator after Disney. Their portfolio consists of; Legoland, London Dungeon, The London Eye, Madam Tussauds, Chessington World of Adventure, Thorpe Park, Cineworld Cinemas (the chain operates 72 cinemas in the UK), Universal Studios and Universal's Islands of Adventure, theme parks located in Florida and Orlando and much, much more.
The Blackstone Group which, with 2 other private equity firms, are currently involved in a multi billion pound takeover of Sainsbury's.
How come they don't invest some money into improving the conditions for the animals in the underground water zoo called Brighton Sealife Centre.
We believe that everything we have said and published is true and substantiated. We stand by our commitment to bring to the public's attention the unacceptable conditions which exist for animals kept in the SeaLife Centre.
Our response to this threat is BRING IT ON !

Please help us make this
year the best yet.
Show the animals you care and be part of something special.
It’s wonderful that since the official World Animal Day website was launched in 2003, the number of events taking place throughout the world to heighten public awareness of animal issues has increased year upon year. The aim of the World Animal Day website is to ensure the trend continues by encouraging everybody interested in animals throughout the world to use this special day to commemorate their love and respect for animals and celebrate our special relationship with the animal kingdom.
As you work within the animal welfare sphere in the UK, we are calling on you to help build the ‘World Animal Day’ initiative in order to unite the movement throughout the world. You can make a start by visiting www.worldanimalday.org.uk now. You'll find loads of ideas to inspire you and everything you need to help you organise a successful World Animal Day event. And I mean ‘everything you need’ – it’s all there waiting for you! Many of the ideas are relatively easy to organise, however if you feel like being a bit more adventurous, you will also find ideas that require a little more time and effort - but with a few helpers on board anything is possible!
Don't forget the website features an event listing facility to provide free publicity to any group or individual who is doing something special connected with animals on or around 4th October.
